This week, life changed. Again. In a way that I didn't imagine. In His way.
And the night before I found out this news, life seemed rough. Tough. Hard. The kind of hard that you hope you never have to go through. That kind of hard.
Imagine, if you will, two doors.
The stand there, off in the distance, with the doors closed. Behind those doors is the unknown. They are foreboding to look at because of what is behind them. The unknown. And for most, at least those who pride themselves on planning and planning well, the unknown is not familiar. It's not comfortable. It's not usually welcomed.
From under those two doors comes rays of light. Just a sliver. I think just to let the one standing on the other side of the hallway know that there is hope with the unknown. That there is something to look forward to behind those doors. Maybe what is behind those doors won't be so bad.
And as you stand and look down the long hall that is the next day, you know you have to walk. You have to put one foot in front of the other, travel down the way, and try the doors.
Maybe they will open. Maybe they won't. Maybe one will open and the other won't. Maybe they will both open.
And then, at the end of the journey down the hall, you try the doors. You try the first one. Closed. Locked. Unavailable for you. You are crushed. You desperately wanted that door to open. It was, of the two, the one that you thought would bring you the most happiness. But its closed. It's not going to open for you.
And so, shoulders slumped, you try the next door. A glimmer of hope shines in the ray of light coming from underneath. Do you dare try to open it? You know that if it too is closed, life is going to be tough to face. You will have to walk back down that long hallway and find another door to open. But, by God's grace, when you try the handle, it opens. A flood of light embraces you. You know, without a doubt, that God has opened it for you. It wasn't your strength, or will, or anything else. It was Him. He opened it for you!
And so, with joy, and a glance back at the other door that remains closed, you walk through. And in that moment, life changes. At least for a little while. At least for now.
Until you go back to knock on the other door again.
Life brings unknowns. Will it be the job or the baby? Will it be what you want more than anything else, or will it be what God wants for you?
At the end of the day, it will always, always, be what God wants for you.
But as my husband reminded me on that life changing night, He lets you go back and knock on the other door again. He lets you try and try and try, and someday, someday, maybe, the door will open.
You'll be blessed with what you want because at that moment it will be what He wants too.
